2-Phenoxyethanol is an organic
chemical compound that is sometimes used in cosmetics and antiseptics (1).
It is also currently used as a preservative in one FDA-approved vaccine, called
Ipol, for the prevention of polio, at a concentration of 0.5% (3). It is also
used as a preservative or stabilizer for other ingredients that might others
wise come apart or deteriorate quickly, or become less effective faster (2). The
FDA allows the use of this ingredient in cosmetics, and as an indirect food
additive and vaccines (3).
It is used in vaccines to kill or
prevent the growth of microorganisms in case of an accidental contamination. However,
improvements were made in order to decrease the amount used in the vaccines (1).
