Killed or inactivated vaccines are produced by
killing pathogen with chemical, heat or radiation (1). The organisms within the
vaccine are able to cause disease. However, while that is true inactivated
whole cell organism may not always induce an immune response that could create
lifelong immunity. Therefore, boosters may be needed in order to make sure the
proper immune response has been made. Even though that is the case these
vaccines are much safer and more stable then live attenuated vaccines even
though they still contain the whole pathogen. This is because the pathogen is
killed so there are no live components in the vaccine, so there is no risk of
inducing the disease. So anyone is able to receive these vaccines. Inactivated
polio vaccine and pertussis (wP) are examples are these vaccines (2).
